Short description from goodreads :

Verity Price and Dominic De Luca are currently putting their relationship through what can only be termed the ultimate stress-test: they're traveling from one side of the country to the other in a rented U-Haul, accompanied only by Verity's colony of Aeslin mice and the contents of her iPod. (Dominic is receiving a crash course in modern dance and pop music.)

But what's a road trip without a hidden purpose? Verity knows she's driving Dominic toward the biggest confrontation of his life—her parents—and that means she needs to start easing him in gently. What better way than with a stop in New Orleans to drink layered cocktails and meet her fun-loving Aunt Rose, who just happens to be a Predeceased American?

Poor Dominic didn't set out to become part of a ghost story, but it looks like that's exactly what's happening, as the old, new, and undead collide all over Bourbon Street.

My opinion:
I’m really fond of this universe an even more of Verity so even if I haven’t gotten book 3 yet ( changed on Christmas, thanks Sullivan!) and despite that this novella is set after I needed to read it without delay. I’m so glad I did! Yes there is a very small element that could be considered spoiler for book 3 but you are so deeply engrossed into verity and Dominic adventures that you put aside what isn’t the most important right now. Even better ^^ the setting is the New Orleans and I’ve become quiet addicted to it.

This was simply fabulous, funny and also informative because Verity is organising a meeting between Dominic and her aunt, the ghostly one, Rose who is no one else than the heroine of Seanan Ghost series with “Sparrow hill Road” ( which I have! ^_^)….i do think Rose is a character I will love greatly, she is as snarky as Verity but even manage to make her blush^^…we also learned of the different kind of ghosts in that universe all while keeping that part quite mysterious as Rose put it “ Daylight isn’t for living one” so we get a glimpse of it and of part of its rules but nothing more . It was really great!

I can’t tell you a lot if I don’t want to make big spoiler since it’s a novella only but if you are reading the Incryptid series you have to read this! The only detail I missed were the mices, only cited I missed them but for the rest  just fabulous!

Under a Spell ( Underworld Detection Agency 5) by Hannah Jayne

Hello to all!

This is the last line to finish and send all the handmade gifts if i want them to still have a small chance to reach their destination before Christmas so i'm focusing on that as soon as i have a few minutes of free time. Not sure it will suffice but i'm doing my best and perhaps Christmas Magic will be with me

Until then i do have a review to share with you so happy reading!

Short description from goodreads :

Count your blessings, guard your curses—and watch your back…

Sophie Lawson was seriously hoping life at the UDA would get back to relative normal now that her boss Pete Sampson has been reinstated. Unfortunately, her new assignment is sending her undercover into a realm where even the most powerful paranormals fear to tread…her old high school. Being a human immune to magic is no defense against soulless picture-perfect mean girls—or a secret witch coven about to sacrifice a missing female student. And Sophie's Guardian, uber-proper Englishman Will, is determined to convince Sophie he's the kind of temptation she should indulge in permanently. Now, as the clock ticks down to apocalypse, he and Sophie will have to summon every trick in the book to battle devilish illusion, lethal sorcery—and betrayals they'll never see coming…

My opinion:
Sometimes I wonder why I continue some series…it’s perhaps because I hate giving up but I’m starting to think I will be glad when this one finish and we get a real conclusion.
Don’t take me wrong it’s not a bad series and I really love all the supernaturals we discover along the story and I do like it…however the author doesn’t manage to catch my rapt attention…Hannah Jayne tried to make the plot complex with false leads etc but for me it was really, really too predictable and I got angry with how obtuse Sophie is becoming… I mean everything is just under her nose… some even tell her , try to reason with her but no she stays focused on  her first idea… no instinct at all ( which in a sense contradict what was her best asset in the precedent novels)

Sophie really disappointed me and the non ending love triangle is not helping her cause but even worse…she doesn’t understand what is happening despite the fact that her sister used a similar stratagem in the past and that got on my nerves

This was a easy read even if did not kept my full attention and perhaps I needed that; and while I would love to read next book it’s not a priority for me to get it at this time but I do plan to see the end to this ;)

Ghosts of Christmas Past ( Haunted Holidays book1) by Jessica Aspen

Hello to all,

i'm once again late to post this but  i do have reasons as i spent yesterday evening ( and night) at the emergency for my mother... fortunately it was more frightening than it was dire so she is back home in one piece. Still getting home at nearly 3am i wasn't feeling well enough to come online....

Since i'm utterly exhausted ( and so behind in my crafting projects, but not giving up - by the way you can enter a contest to win an handmade gift made by myself here) i will make this short and leave you with my first holidays reads for this season.

Happy Reading

Short description from goodreads :

Romantic suspense and holiday romance, all wrapped up with a ghost story. Brrr. Warm up this Christmas with Ghosts of Christmas Past.Jen MacNamara flees the Christmas wedding of her best friend and cheating fiancé and runs to the country to spend the holiday alone. It's the perfect plan, until her unexpectedly sexy neighbor and landlord, Nate Pierce, insists on bringing the holiday to her--complete with a Christmas tree, hot chocolate, and an unexpected kiss.

And that's not Jen's only problem.

The cozy country farmhouse is already occupied by something evil. Now Jen's nights are spent wrapped in sensual dreams of a past life, and her days growing closer to Nate as they solve the mystery of the malevolent ghost that haunts not only the house, but also wants Jen dead.

Explore Jessica Aspen's new world of contemporary, new adult, Gothic romance with her new short paranormal romance series: Haunted Holidays.

My opinion:
I quite enjoyed this story despite being left with some unanswered question… I do love Jessica’s writing stile it’s engaging and immerse us quickly in the story. She also managed to make characters we can connect immediately with…I could only pity Jen..; not only her fiancé cheatd on her wxith her best friends but he even dare to ask her to give her wedding plans to them , all her work and to organise it for them?! What a jerk!!! I really hated him on the stop same for the so called best friend…. No friends would act like that.
Nate also suffered on his side….but deep down both are persistent, courageous and honest… I loved that.

The way the romance is linked to the holidays and ghosts is really well done and made this one quite original, I can already tell you that I would love to see her other Haunted holidays stories when they will be released because it’s tempting and different.

However that’s also where I was left with an unfinished feeling…. Perhaps because I can be too picky when reading but still….i was taken aback with the way they took care of the ghost… for me it was not enough , not satisfactory…when they discover the truth  etc ( trying not to spoil everything) but it was too easy confrontation especially seeing how strong the ghost was…. What bothered me even more and still bother me in fact (^^;;) is the link between Nathaniel and Nate…..which is not clear at all…..we think one is the descendant of the other… that would be logical…..however when we learn of the story that becomes impossible with the only information we have…. Seeing that Jen thought about checking genealogy etc I would have loved an explanation… same as who did the sleight^^;;

Now like I said I’m picking and that’s why those details bothered me but the story can still catch and keep the interest nevertheless so I do recommend it….because if you are not as attached to detail as I am you will enjoy this one even more!

If you want some different holidays romance, spicy enough too, and love Ghosts stories this one is a story you should not miss.

Her alien Savior ( Ultimate Passage 1) by Elle Thorne

Hello to all!

I don't know how it is for you but for me end of the year is always a little hetic as i try to finish all the handmade gifts i was to give and stay behind schedule despite my best efforts... which sadly means that i have even les stime to read until i've completed them.

Now i won't stop the blog during this time either but i'm glad to had an review i had written and forgotten  a little. If you follow me you remember that earlier this year i was in an " alien" phase i was really happy with some of my discoveries but a little disappointed with others...  Today i'm sharing with you the book i enjoyed the less and thus  the review i put aside for a time as well.

Happy Reading.

Short description from goodreads :

 An alien soldier without emotions.
Finn is three quarters Asazi and one quarter human. He's a lieutenant in the Asazi army and his desire is to be the best soldier he can. He's spent a lifetime denying his human side, only to find out that now it makes him key to a mission on Earth. A mission that includes Marissa Sanchez, Target 41, a determined, smart-mouthed spitfire that brings out emotions his Asazi nature rejects.
A human woman with a target on her.

Marissa's dream is to keep her restaurant from being seized by ruthless developers. She's broke, out of options, has a deadline, and a cheating ex who offers to marry her and solve her financial problems. Everything changes when a guy named Finn saves her life and provides a completely different kind of option

My opinion:
As you can see August saw me read a lot of aliens romances from all kind and this one is the one i liked less.... it’s not bad written and the plot  isn’t bad even if it(s partly quite predictable.... no but i had some trouble getting into the universe.
For me it seemed really strange that no one was intrigued about what was happening to the women, that no one would fight against such actions.... i guess that i despite the Asazi. Finn is only part human and he fought that part because he wasn’t able to fit easily in the Asazi world.... i found it sad. But i liked him i mean he does ask question, he does think by himself and it’s courageous.....the way is attempted to make coffee was really funny and he could be utterly  protective and tender when caring for Marissa. I liked Kal as well he does care for Finn and tried to help him.
Marissa is a dedicated daughter... she does her best to keep her father’s dream alive when she isn’t aware of what she really wants. What i liked teh most about her was how she didn’t fall for her ex manoeuvre  i mean i could even suspect he was being her troubles from the start.

Now what i didn’t like  was the lack of asazi’s implication like i explained before and  the fact that we don’t get answers either. Finn wonders about what is happening to the women... to n°42 for example since she is reported missing. Kal tell him that she was send back home and he just accept that... yes he tries to check later but on another woman so even if Kal was sincere perhaps he was not aware of something bad because hey she is still missing, nobody is worried about this detail? Also, Finn isn’t telling anyone about his wings?! Not even his cousin after everything? Especially considering that he want to see him again... too strange

I hate being left with questions like that so  i couldn’t enjoy this story properly and while i really would love to know what happened to Kal  it’s not a series i think i will continue.. perhaps if book 2 get free i will give it a try but other way i think i will focus on others series for the time being.

Poltergeist ( Greywalker 2) by Kat Richardson

Hello to all,

Last week passed in a blur and not  in a good way. The events of Paris are having their effects here as well and slowly we try to let life triumph over the terror but we do have a thought for all the victims.

Today , i'm sharing with you my thought of the second book in a series i've started this year and that i liked enough to follow up ( and still plan to) so here is my opinion on Poltergeist second book in the Greywalker series by Kat Richardson

Happy reading

Genre: urban fantasy
Violence: mild

Language: normal

Short description from goodreads :

Harper Blaine was your average small-time PI until she died - for two minutes. Now she's a Greywalker - walking the thin line between the living world and the paranormal realm. And she's discovering that her new abilities are landing her all sorts of "strange" cases.

In the days leading up to Halloween, Harper's been hired by a university research group that is attempting to create an artificial poltergeist. The head researcher suspects someone is faking the phenomena, but Harper's investigation reveals something else entirely - they've succeeded. And when one of the group's members is killed in a brutal and inexplicable fashion, Harper must determine whether the killer is the ghost itself, or someone all too human.

My opinion:
Good but confusing that’s how i would resume this book... after reading book 1 i was happy to own the next book to read when i wanted and i don’t regret it but the change with book 1 is a little abrupt. In Greywalker, the character discovers her powers and we do it at the same rythm, now that she knows what she is capable off  Harper is still adjusting and learning but more confident, i liked that.

This time she is investigating a sort of Poltergeist creation group. An university is founding a research on that topic and the professor in charge isn’t happy with the results thinking about sabotage.... it doesn’t start well when Harper dislikes the man but it gets worse when a murder is added... it’s where it gets confusing. The purpose of the research, the explanation and the real objective of the Professor all of that is really hard to understand, perhaps because i’ve been interrupted yes but in any case i didn’t like that feeling. I even had difficulty to replace some of the secondary characters from book 1.
Now i can’t say that the confusion is due to the lack of author’s research far from it but  you really ned to stay focused on the book and nothing else to grab any detail that will be handy later , it’s not a book that you can start, put aside for later then come back to it  the plot is too deep and detailled for that.

So, i did enjoy it but not as much as the first instalment and definitively not a read a would recommend when you want a light story without deepth. I do plan to continue the series though but i hope next one will be a little less confusing but still captivating.

Dead until Dark ( Sookie Stackhouse 1) by Charlaine Harris

Hello to all,

i'm sorry to post this so late, it was ready the beginning of the week but since my weekend was spent organising a special 24h ( which lasted even longer) Chtullu roleplaying game party.. i was simply too worn out to remember that i needed to post this review.

I haven't recovered yet either as more things piled up  but  slowly i will and let's start by this long awaited review of a far from new series but on ei'm only discovering now.

Happy reading
Publisher: Ace Books
Publication: 2008
ISBN:  0441016995
Genre: urban fantasy
Violence: strong

Language: normal
sex: strong
Public: 18+

Short description from goodreads :

Sookie Stackhouse is a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. She's quiet, keeps to herself, and doesn't get out much. Not because she's not pretty. She is. It's just that, well, Sookie has this sort of "disability." She can read minds. And that doesn't make her too dateable. And then along comes Bill. He's tall, dark, handsome - and Sookie can't 'hear' a word he's thinking. He's exactly the kind of guy she's been waiting for all her life.

But Bill has a disability of his own: He's a vampire. Worse than that, hangs with a seriously creepy crowd, with a reputation for trouble - of the murderous kind.

And when one of Sookie's colleagues is killed, she begins to fear she'll be next ..

My opinion:
It took me quite a time before starting this series, somehow i was a little afraid but after reading the novella in the Dark secrets anthology, i wanted to read more of this author and thankfully i remembered that i had this book in my pile soi could start without delay.

I do like the author ‘s writing style, it’s clear and she built an interesting universe even if i don’t have all the rules yet, for example she tells us that vampires are the last one to have revealed their existence and got special right... i would have wanted to know a little more about the others paranormals.

The characters are well buit and so far i prefer Sam... who is there and loyal but not too much on the “ ownership” side. Bill  intrigues me he does seem to care for Sookie but somehow i’m not at ease with him. As for Jason, Sookie’s brother.. so far i dislike him greatly... i hate his behaviour but even more his reaction to Sookie past... of all other he should have been the one to trust her but not only he doubted her but he even accused her.
Sookie is interesting...she had a difficult life and her gift didn’t help ut despite everything she still is kind and looks for the positive... i quite admire that.

No i do prefer when the romance is building slowly along the book when it’s a serie slike this one so having Sookie jump in bed  in teh first book bothered me a little even if i do understand the circonstances and the importance of it for the plot so it’s okay just not what i prefer.

The plot, hum it’s okay i did guess the murderer identity but  i’m more curious about the problem Eric is at this time. The rythm is just what it should be and it’s read quite easily.
I do plan to continue this series and i have the second one ready in the pile , i think so at least, so we will see if the pleasure continues

Score:  4/5

[early review] Pirateship Down : Stories from the World of the Sentinels of New Orleans by Suzanne Johnson+giveaway

Hello to all!

i told you you would get double dose of posts from me this week and hopefully next week we can return to normal but we will see what life has in store for us.

First a little explanation, as you know i'm a HUGE fan of Suzanne Johnson 's writing and her series Sentinels of New Orleans is one of my favourite series. Since the next book in the series " Belle Chasse" has been postoned due to publishers decision, she very kindly heard her fans and put together severals of the short stories and novellas she wrote along the years together in a book, yes a print book as well!!!*___* -squeal in delight-  even better she put some new exclusive bonus and story in it too!

She is releasing that now to make the wait seems shorter before Belle Chasse but this book can be read as a standalone if we want or if you are new to the series. Lot of the stories takes place before the actual series so if you haven't read it you shouldn't feel lost and it's a good way to be introduced in the universe. For the readers this give an additionnal flavour to the chracters and a wonderful reading time.

The book will be up in the first days of november( 2nd) so you still have time to preorder and Suzanne is hosting a giveaway for those of you who preorder... i will even throw another incentive but before we come to that let's get a very little insight into the book's content.

Happy reading!

Description from goodreads :

From award-winning author Suzanne Johnson comes the first story collection set in the Sentinels of New Orleans world, including the all-new novella, Pirateship Down.

French pirate Jean Lafitte is tall, cobalt-eyed, broad-shouldered and immortal. What’s not to love? But New Orleans’ most esteemed member of the historical undead is headed for trouble: He’s determined to reclaim Le Diligent, his gold-laden schooner lost at sea in 1814 and recently found at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico near Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana.
The U.S. Coast Guard might beg to differ.

New Orleans’ wizard sentinel DJ Jaco and her merman friend Rene Delachaise can either lock Lafitte up or save him from himself, joining him on a road trip to Cajun country. Terrebonne Parish—not to mention its jail—might never be the same after the events of the all-new novella Pirateship Down.

Wizards and Cajun mermen, sexy shifters and undead French pirates. Welcome to the world of the Sentinels of New Orleans in this first collection of new and revised stories, along with a little Louisiana lagniappe.

My opinion:
Fabulous! A  great compilation of novellas and short stories available for new readers as well as for the fans without any difficulty.

Suzanne really did a wonderful job to introduce the world of the Sentinels of new Orleans for those new to it and set a form of timeline for the ones who follow the series from the beginning. She mixed past pieces of work that were available as treat on her blog for a limited time, some updated, modified etc, with new stories very captivating and as a bonus some info about the universes and the characters so that this book  is something new for all of us.

It would be too difficult to tell you my opinion on each novella  without spoiling it so i will just tell you a little about the main ones. Each one can be read as a standalone because Suzanne really saw to that but in some case i will tell you why it’s even better once you have read the main books first.

1° “Talk like a Pirate” by Suzanne Johnson

This story takes place one year before Royal Street and the main character is our dear pirate Jean Lafitte, and we also meet in a lesser measure Gerry St. Simon, the wizard, master of DJ.
This short story could be read alone, before the series but I would recommend you to read the series first to have a better understanding of the universe ( though there are enough info so you don’t feel lost reading it first but you will enjoy it better, to his full potential after having read book 1 and 2)

In this novella, two young girls summon our dear Jean Lafitte and are a little overwhelmed by the results, one of them, Rhyn, finds herself as his guide to one of the place he stocked in the past while teaching him about the present time a little. Their idea of a fun party doesn’t go as planned but thankfully the Sentinel Gerry is there to arrange the situation.

Funny story, we discover a side of Jean before he meets DJ and we can see how intelligent he was already even if Dj tempered a little his behaviour by catching his interest. We also see Gerry in action which is a plus since in Royal Street  DJ  is stepped up in his shoes. So if you have read “Royal Street” and see Jean in action in “River Road” this novella becomes a fabulous addition to the series

2° “Rivalry” by Suzanne Johnson

Rivalry is kind of a prequel but not a direct one. We meet Alex Warin and his cousin Jake when they were adolescents (so long, long before Royal Street).

Alex is just fifteen and has experienced his first shift, the poor boy doesn’t know what is happening and after a growth spurt he is afraid to pass for a freak if they also discover how quickly he is healing.  Afraid and confused, Alex decides to leave his family until, another shifter comes to his help to explain and teach him.

In this short story, we see the rivalry (thus the title) between Alex and Jake and we learn it comes from even longer before, but we also get a better understanding of Alex by seeing how his family is working. It’s a great help to understand the adult he is in the series

You can read this story even if you haven’t started the Sentinels of New Orleans series without any trouble.

3° “Intervention” by Suzanne Johnson.

This short story takes place approximately two years before Royal Street (book 1 of the series) and it concerns Alex Warin, already an enforcer, and his cousin Jake, after his return from Afghanistan. You also meet Ken Hachette, the homicide detective, which will appears in the series, starting to have a bigger role in Elysian Fields and discover how he became friend with Alex.

Alex is called by his family to help getting Jake out of jail; Jake has started the gator with is friend Ken Hachette for the funds but he is running it alone. After his return from Afghanistan and his injury that put him out of military he was starting to get back on his feet until he meets his new girlfriend whom didn’t get his mother’s approval.  Mother’s intuition could be right and Alex got into trouble not calling the Sentinels Gerald ( aka Gerry) St. Simon and Drusilla Jaco.

Action, magic and still the rivalry between Alex and Jake (they never learn, don’t they?), and we discover a talented enforced but who still need to improve.

 The story can be read before the series but honestly you enjoy it a lot more after having read the series or at least Royal Street, you can  then really appreciate Alex’s mistakes after all he put DJ through it’s good to see him not at his best^^;;

4° “Pirateship Down”

This novella is the pure treasure of this kind of anthology,  Pirateship Down is a real pearl when you have read the series but you should really be able to enjoy it without difficulty after haing read the “lagniappe” becaus ethat give you  a big inside in the universe.
For those who have read the series, you can see how this fit wonderfully and at the same time stays a pure treat as it doesn’t impact the next book  ( in the sense that you won’t feel like you have missed something if you read the book and not the novella but  really that would be too sad to miss this!)

Jean Lafitte has decided to reclaim one of his ship which has been found in the waters of the sea... to do so he drag along his friend Rene and Dj which is still suffering from her last experience. Both friends know they can’t go against Jean but that they must keep him out of the troubles....with a proud determined pirate you can imagine how it won’t be easy . Full of humour this novella won’t leave you indifferent, this was a pure joy and full of laughing time for me so i can’t recommend it to you enough.

If you love Jean or simply want to have a fun reading moment, read this novella!

Suzanne really did us a big favor by creating this book we awaited so long as a treat to be patient until the release of the next book so don’t hesitate to grab this one and spread the word. Authors who are so dedicated to their readers should be rewarded!

Score:  5/5

Description from goodreads :

’Twas a week before Christmas, and at the auction house…

At six foot one, Gwen Chambers has felt like a giant her whole life. She’s a calm, capable nurse saving lives in a busy London hospital, but healthy men give her heart palpitations. When larger-than-life rugby player “Little” John Sheldon convinces her to bid on him in his team’s fundraising auction, she discovers how pleasurable heart palpitations can be.

A rugby player was stirring, with desire no one could douse…

John has wanted Gwen since he first saw her, but when he’s injured in a match just before Christmas he suddenly needs her too. Not only can the sexy nurse help him recover, but she might be able to help him look after his daughter—a shy ten-year-old who speaks only French.

But will it be a Happy Christmas for all, and for all a good night?
From decorating the Christmas tree to ice skating at the Tower of London, Gwen helps father and daughter open up and bond with each other—and she bonds right along with them. But when John’s agent calls with a life-changing offer, Gwen has to decide how far she’s willing to go for her perfect match. Will their first Noël also be their last?

My opinion:
A wonderful insight in the series, an appetizer for the new readers and a sweet treat for the already fan of the series.
Kat Latham makes a good job of giving enough information so we can immediately settle in the story of  John and Gwen. Those two are simply perfect for each other but a little clumsy about their feeling .  I loved to see them learning about each other and their feeling, i also realy loved how Gwen was with John’s daugther.

It’s a really good  novella wih the magic of Christmas feeling  in the background and it made me want to read the complete series as soon as possible because i loved the group even if we only saw a few of  John’s teammates they won me over. I also hope it will give some explanation about John’s past because that side is a little left out , we know how he met  his daughter’s mother but that’s is.

I also guess that part of me was a little torn at the ending , it was moving , happy and at the same time it means i will miss John a lot but i can’t tell you more.

If you haven’t read this author yet, give this novella a try it will show you how well written this series is. If you love rugby romance and christma soen this is just your alley.

Score:  4/5
