IM ( InCryptid 3.2 ) By Seanan McGuire

Hello to all,

Since my mother's state didn't improve ( more the opposite if i want to see the reality which i don't) i didn't have a lot of reading time so i decided to focus on a couple of novellas or shorts story that i had in my pile and that i could read waiting for the appointment.

Thanks to Amber i've got the books i was missing in the Incryptid series so i didn't have to wait any longer to check the free novellas the author offers us....it just made me even more impatient to go back to the main series so soon you will see more of my opinion on the InCryptid series.

Happy reading!

Description from goodreads :

Arthur Harrington's situation is...special, thanks to having an incubus for a father and a semi-stable grasp of his "special powers" (if you can call them that). As a consequence, he's always been allowed to stay somewhat sheltered from the family business, communicating with the outside world largely via the computer and his cousins.

Then Sarah got hurt. He's been climbing the walls ever since, trying to think of something he can do to help—but when no one really understands the way a cuckoo's mind works, what can he possibly do to make things better? Especially when she's in Ohio and he's in Oregon?

All he wants is a sign that she's going to be okay...and that she's still going to be the girl he thinks no one knows he's in love with.

My opinion:
I was really curious to read this novella because if we do hear about Artie in the series, we know nearly nothing about him, he is just cited once or twice and it made him quite mysterious.
This short is in fact his point of view about what happened to Sarah and the consequences since it takes place months after.

I really enjoyed discovering him that way and  i hope we will see more of him in the future.

It was very short, too short but a really moving story and i couldn't help and shed a tear

Really a great bonus for those following this series but in this case i do recommend to read this after book 3 hall-off Ragnarok, it would make more sense ( yes i have read it in order i just need to write the review)

Wolf Protector ( Federal Paranormal Unit 1)by Milly Taiden

Hello to all!

I've decided to start on an author for which i have a lot of book on my wishlist ( fewer in my pile) but one that i still hadn't started : Milly Taiden. I'm not sure why i postponed reading these, perhaps i was told it's super steamy ( it is!) and it made me hesitant, perhaps i had so big expectation i was fearing disappointment... i don't know.

In any case i started it and i've read book 1 in her Federal Paranormal Unit which was a good suprise despite some points bothering me but let's see that more in detail

Happy reading.

Description from goodreads :

 A woman with a secret…
The Federal Paranormal Unit is an elite squad of supernaturals dedicated to solving missing persons cases. Erica’s gift allows her a special connection with the crime, but it comes at a deep personal cost… Until now, she’s kept her gift a secret, even from the other members of the team. But this case will throw her together with Agent Trent Buchanan. He’s the object of her secret desires, but he’s also a cocky womanizer. She’d rather swim in shark-infested waters with a paper cut than admit she has feelings for him.

A man with one desire…
Wolf Shifter Trent wants Erica more than he’s ever wanted any woman. He’s spent years patiently waiting for her to admit that she wants him too. Working one-on-one in a race to find a serial killer, Trent’s patience and Erica’s resolve wear thin. When Trent discovers the truth about Erica, will he accept her for who she is? And can he protect her from the horrors that her gift brings?

A case that pushes them to the edge…

Erica will have to risk it all if she wants to stop the killer, and when she does, Trent may have to put his own life on the line to make sure his mate is protected…

My opinion:
An enjoyable story, i loved the idea of a federal paranormal unit and the characters are excellent. However even if i did love this book there were some elements that bothered or annoyed me a little more.
For example, the fact that the members of the team ignore each other specificities sound strange to me, it's supposed to be done so that if one is captured he or she can't reveal anything....bof that case seems less possible than a member of the team needing help because of his or her specific talent. Also for me if you put your life in danger being protected by your partners is essential and that's not possible if there isn't a real trust.
However the story was written so that i could forget that point and focus on the investigation and story itself...which revealed others problems for me.  First, the culprit was too easy, it was really obvious so i was annoyed that professional like them didn't connect the dots sooner. The investigation was too slow in that domain, now if we take into account that Erica does feel what the victims feel i guess we can understand her mind being slower to realize things after that.

Nevertheless, Erica disappointed me...yes she had a difficult life and her " gift" isn't an easy one but for me it was even more reason to act differently. She is attracted to Trent, that's great, he is her mate , she doesn't know it etc etc all that  oki but jumping to bed with him when she doesn't trust him...a big NO for me. For me trust must come first and she doubt him and his reasons nearly until the end so just jumping to bed with him and not only once sounded wrong to me. The fact that Trent didn't hesitate to have adventures before fin ding is mate was also disturbing as i do prefer my wolf loyal and patient ( so yes i would have preferred he waited THE one, instead of enjoying his life until he did)

I know it seems to be a lot of negative point and in a sense it is but it's only about  personal preference. Put aside it's a good story and i had a good time reading it. It does have a lot of steamy parts if you love those , if you don't you can skip most of them and still enjoy the story a lot.
I do want to discover more about the team so i'm happy to have book 2 ready. Milly Taiden sure has a  great writing style and i do have several others of her book on my list so i will be happily jumping in another of her story sooner than later.

Short description from goodreads :

After the death of her parents, Kat Thomas retreated from college life into an online fantasy game.

But what if the game she plays is closer to reality?

When a panther shifter named Alex knocks on her door one night, he delivers a message and a package. Kat's birth mother was a powerful mage who has just been murdered…and now the killer is after Kat. The package contains her mother’s talisman: an amber necklace that latches onto Kat’s neck and attacks anyone who tries to remove it. Before she knows it, ice is shooting from her hands and she’s on the run from an assassin.

Kat must navigate a world of magic and intrigue, fight the forces who want her dead, and protect her friends from becoming collateral damage—all while coming to terms with her new identity. She’s heir to a powerful legacy, but only if she lives long enough to claim it.

My opinion:
An excellent beginning for an urban fantasy series! Since i'm a roleplaying gamer ( though never online) i was very curious about this title even more since it had Magic yes but also shifter so when i got the opportunity to discover it in exchange for a review i was delighted.

It's really good and it makes it difficult to decide by what to start^^. The characters, i love Alex he is a panther shifter and in this universe it means that he is spending the majority of the time in animal form, even better he is deeply loyal so he won me over immediately.
Kat, it took a bit longer for me to warm up to her....she had to face a lot at a young age: she has been adopted and her adopted parents died not long before the beginning of the story so she still has difficulties to cope with that. She spend most of her time playing a roleplaying game online where she is Serafina a big powerful sorceress...i guess that yes it's healthier than drugs etc but  as a gamer i love the relationship we can forge with other player in real life so it bothered me a little that she never tried to at least meet those she is in a team with especially when we discover how close she is to some of them like GreyMist.

Kat is still young so when something really magical comes at her she panics...learning who was her real mother isn't easier to accept but being a mage and having a talisman that she can't control that's terrifying and she is determined first not to believe it and when forced to she want to take it off and go back to normal life... it seemed a bit strange to me but also understandable what bothered me was how she trusted more easily Casper that she did with Alex who proved himself.( and hey he is a shifter^^)....suddenly Kat is all willing to learn magic and with Casper...she never once ask how he knew her mother (he tells her a little but proof? none) . Terrified that  someone is trying to kill her she jumps at any chance to be safe or so she thinks...only when her friend start to be in danger that she acts a little more mature and  i appreciated her courage.

The story doesn't really end on a cliffhanger even if it's clear that  a lot more is to come but i was happy with this ending and i would love to see more of Kat as she learns about Elustria and her mother but also i want more of Alex and i'm curious about which other magical creatures we will discover next. The author showed in this one how she could keep us intrigued and immersed in the story so i have good hope for book 2

It's definitively a series i hope to continue and i do recommend it if you love urban fantasy

If you love werewolf romances with steamy mating and lots of adventure then scroll up and start reading this one now!

My opinion:
I liked this one, it was my first attempt with this author and i could definitively read more even if this story isn’t my favourite.

The universe isn’t too original but it’s well built and i loved how teh author explained the different customs between the different shifters packs/ villages. Layla is a charming character, i loved to see her  discovering herself under a new light when the need arose. She is loyal and determined, very stubborn but also very kind.  I was a little sad to see her cast aside like she was at first. Aidan isn’t bad himself...he is an alpha prince and we do understand him better as the story progresses and we learn from his past.

I guess that i regretted the fact that they both mated before learning to care for each other... i see teh circumstances, i know they were supposed too anyway but i prefer when it’s made by love not anguish or necessity.

All together it’s a charming ( with a lot of violence^^;;) shifter romance and without cliffhanger which is definitively better ( but i would have loved to see how they were going to make it between their 2 village^^)
