Happy reading!

Description from goodreads :

The first book in the best-selling Big Bad Bite Series!

What would it be like to live in a world where you were considered abnormal even to those who were above the norm?

Jenna O’Conner is not human, nor is she considered the norm for the supernatural Other community. It’s important she hide her true nature from both humans and Others.

Right after moving to a new city, Jenna runs into trouble in the form of a deadly, mouthwatering man named Adam McPhee. He’s an alpha werewolf determined to do two things: figure out exactly what Jenna is and have her all to himself.

As if that weren’t enough for Jenna to deal with, a group of extremist Shifters who consider humans to be cattle and who think that factions of Others should stay within their own species—never to intermingle—come to town. Jenna has to find a way to shut them down, but in the process of trying to do that, she discovers things about herself that even she had never thought were possible.
Who said the wolf was what you had to worry about?
Welcome to the real world—the Other world.

Contains mature themes.

My opinion:

Interesting....while i didn't like the main female character and didn't really warm up to her i really enjoyed the universe and some secondary characters making me want to read more but let see that in more detail.

Adam is an alpha wolf, from what we can gather he did have difficulties while growing up because his wolf is really strong and present which isn't well accepted. However, despite all that he is a very loyal and caring leader and as we discover a quite patient mate to be, very tolerant and accepting . Really it wasn't hard to come to love him and support him even if i regret the fact we didn't get more insights on his childhood but hopefully we could still learn more in the rest of the serie.

Jenna is the opposite...she isn't bad per say but having spent her life sheltered she is ignorant of a lot of things regarding shifters and she  is definitively too self centered for my taste. I get that she wants to be independent, to prove herself etc but she is so selfish at time that i wanted to shake or strangle her. She may be powerful but she doesn't look for others than herself.  While at first she doesn't understand why Adam is reacting as he is and could be confused while she does learn the reason she acts like it's nothing, no matter the risk for others, risk she perfectly understand. No, trust issues aside that's what she wants when she wants....she must have gotten that from her mother but definitively can't like her at this point even  if she does act at the end.

Secondary characters...there you have so many that's it's not hard to find at least one you want to support  and learn more about him or her. Kent, the demon is funny. he is a police officer and was surprisingly good to Jenna. he sure made me curious. That being said i think i want more of the tigers though.... that family is fascinating and funny despite being highly dangerous and still quite mysterious. There is Alec, not sure what his real job is but he fight in underground battle which help him to be well informed. Then it's Gage....we know little except that he is fiercely protective of his family ( even Alec while they bicker all the time) and that he must be in some kind of elite army/ security shifter agency....all top secret of course but with a lot of interesting toys or electronics to be successful in highly dangerous mission..... i so want to learn more about him. Then you have the sister lulu, we only hear about her so far, and  even better the Russian grandma.....oh that one will make you smile for sure

I also found quite funny that if some groups are trying to impose to shifters to stay with their own ( wolves with wolves, tiger with tigers etc, etc) not mixing between shifters of different origin or worse with other paranormal. Both pack masters we learn about did the opposite, once with a demon, then with a tiger... It's promising some sparks. There are still so much to learn about this world but at the same time nothing is missing preventing us to enjoy this story fully so it's really well done.

There is a small cliffhanger but nothing major  we do get the essential for this story to be happy and it just make us impatient to read book two ( with tigers!!!!!). There is a major main plot taking place along the whole series so that isn't solved yet of course but  each book has it's own story which feel complete so it was really no problem for me.

If you want a good paranormal romance you can try this one

Score:  4/5

Fixin' To Die (Kenni Lowry 1) by Tonya Kappes

Hello to all,

Here Carnaval is in full activity which means nearly no sleep (the fact we lost 1h isn't helping) but it also means more reading time at least when my mind isn't too focused on sleep.
For the next week i will try to share with you opinion on some books for which a new release is coming in the next days or weeks so you can eb ready for those.

Today i'm starting with the first book in the Kenni Lowry Series by Tonya Kappes, which is an author i adore as you know.

Happy reading!!!
Publisher: Henery Press
Publication: 2016
ISBN:  1635110378
Genre: cozy mystery, paranormal
Violence: mild

Language: normal
sex: none
Public: 18+
Source: earc

Description from goodreads :

Kenni Lowry likes to think the zero crime rate in Cottonwood, Kentucky is due to her being sheriff, but she quickly discovers the ghost of her grandfather, the town’s previous sheriff, has been scaring off any would-be criminals since she was elected. When the town’s most beloved doctor is found murdered on the very same day as a jewelry store robbery, and a mysterious symbol ties the crime scenes together, Kenni must satisfy her hankerin’ for justice by nabbing the culprits.

With the help of her Poppa, a lone deputy, and an annoyingly cute, too-big-for-his-britches State Reserve officer, Kenni must solve both cases and prove to the whole town, and herself, that she’s worth her salt before time runs out.

My opinion:
It was a real pleasure for me to discover this series, i have loved all what i was lucky to read so far from Tonya Kappes and this is no exception. This series is a cozy mystery mixing investigation with a touch of paranormal and the whole is perfectly  balanced making it a very enjoyable story.

Kenni Lowry is the sheriff of her small city and not everyone is happy about that. However, Kenni is following in her poppa's steps and she really loves her job. When a murder, then a robbery occur the citizens are all over themselves and it's Kenni's job to find the culprit(s) and bring back the peace.  Calling into the help of the State Reserve officer , she receives Finn as a temporary deputy  and she isn't too indifferent to his charms thankfully he is also very competent.
After asking for his help she also get the visit ( and help) from her Poppa as a ghost making appearances at the most inadequate time but still being of a great comfort to her.

I loved how the investigation took place in the small city and how Kenni had to learn to separate  friends from suspects . While i had my suspicion the author manage to twists some situation to make your doubt your instincts and surprise you with her revelations.

All together it's a really great series that i plan to continue, i just would have loved if Kenni adjusted herself quicker to her Poppa appearances.

Score:  4,5/5

Nephilim Falling: a Trenton Investigations prequel by Felicia Beasley

Hello to all!!!

It's not often that i post two reviews per week but Nephilim Falling release this week and i was lucky to get an arc so i had to share my opinion on it even if i wasn't really sure how to express it at first..yes some books are like that

Happy reading!

Description from goodreads :

They say demons and angels don’t mix. I say people should mind their own damn business.

My brother, Damian, has been my rock ever since mom left. Didn’t matter to him that I was a lowly half-demon while angel blood flowed through his veins. I was his and he was mine.

But nothing lasts forever.

He wants me to go to college. I’d rather fight a hundred sentinels than lead a boring, safe life hiding who I am. So when a nephilim goes missing, I go behind Damian’s back to find the teen. Maybe if I can solve the case, he will upgrade me to his partner in crime solving.

As bodies begin to drop, I realize I’m in way over my head. But there’s no way I’m going to admit that, not when my future hangs in the balance. Instead, I set my eyes on recruiting the help of the new kid. Lucas is arrogant, sexy, and persistently trying to get my number.

He’s also a nephilim. Off-limits, no matter how good he looks flinging fireballs.

Then again, I was never good at resisting temptation

My opinion:
A great investigation in a universe where nephilim, angel, demon, etc are among us and not everyone is happy about that. Sentinels area  group of supposed humans who hunt the paranormal being , despising them when they are "kind" they put them in ghetto, prison most often they simply kill without asking question. Because of that reality, Nephilim ( descendant from angel) or damion ( descendant from demon) are hiding... not really accepted by their parent side they are left to fend for themselves and don't mix together.

However Damian is different he is a nephilim working as a PI for both groups and he protect his sister who is a half demon... he is courageous, super protective and has a lot of responsabilities but Lexi isn't that little anymore and she wants to be his partner not just the little sister...when case of missing nephilim appears she goes behind his back to find and punish the culprit. She is determined, intelligent and loyal i loved that about her.
To have a little chance and because of the circumstances, she end up with the new boy at school as her partner: Lucas who is also a nephilim and one so , so sexy. He is hiding part of his part but he is really attracted to Lexi, showing some interesting powers when needed.

The investigation is really well done, some part of the story end on cliffhanger but this is a prequel so i hope we will learn more later.I guess the only thing i regretted a little was how quickly Lexi and Lucas became intimate... yes she is 18 not 15 (even if she sure acts like it) and with the story it make sense but somehow i would have wanted her to think more.

I liked Damian....perhaps it's why i'm not that happy with what happen....Wes his partner is definitively funny and despite his looks he sure care for Lexi. i hope to see more of him
definitively a series i would be happy to follow as there are still a lot to discover.

Score:  3,5/5

Kill Without Mercy ( ARES Security 1) by Alexandra Ivy

Hello to all!!!!

Time is definitively flying with my birthday at the corner but at the same time i find myself strangely zen ( or resigned) with all  the administrative trouble i'm under  i have no energy left for unnecessary stress. Fortunately, despite juggling with the appointments and numerous calls to make i found the time to read and really good friends to provide me with said books (thanks!!!)

So i have been reading my chritsmas/ new year book and  this time i picked one from an author i already know but in another genre ( paranormal) this time it was mostly a military suspense romance ( with bit of supernatural) and i was longing for some suspense romance without knowing it so i couldn't resist trying this new series. Next one will be another genre again as i'm varying this month

Happy reading

Publication: 2015

Genre: romantic suspense,military
Violence: strong

Language: normal
sex: strong
Public: 18+

Description from goodreads :

From the hellhole of a Taliban prison to sweet freedom, five brave military heroes have made it home—and they’re ready to take on the civilian missions no one else can. Individually they’re intimidating. Together they’re invincible. They’re the men of ARES Security.

Rafe Vargas is only in Newton, Iowa, to clear out his late grandfather’s small house. As the covert ops specialist for ARES Security, he's eager to get back to his new life in Texas. But when he crosses paths with Annie White, a haunted beauty with skeletons in her closet, he can't just walk away—not when she’s clearly in danger…

There’s a mysterious serial killer on the loose with a link to Annie’s dark past. And the closer he gets, the deeper Rafe’s instinct to protect kicks in. But even with his considerable skill, Annie’s courage, and his ARES buddies behind him, the slaying won’t stop. Now it’s only a matter of time before Annie’s next—unless they can unravel a history of deadly lies that won’t be buried.

My opinion:
I do love military romance suspense and in this one the suspense is well done. To start, i loved that we got a little description of all the men in the team right in the prologue...of course we only get the minimum at that point but it was great as we could immediately feel a connection to them and jump into the story without wondering who was who.

All the member of ARES suffered a lot and that created such a strong tie between them that they would do everything for each other. Because no one understand them as well as they do they decided to use their speciality to built together a security firm ARES.

Rafe is the head of the team, the one that keep them together and ARES was his idea....however before they can start he is called to clean his grandfather house which has been sold and that leads him to Iowa. There he meets a woman and his instincts kick in. he always followed his gut so when he discover that Annie has vision he isn't surprised and doesn't take that for lies. He believes her and try to see how it could help.

Annie 's past is dark...daughter of a serial killer ( or supposed one as he wasn't judged but killed when arrested) she got into the system as a child and she had to hide her gift because no one wants a little girl seeing murder in her head. Years later when the vision start again  she has to make sure it's nightmare not vision and if it's vision she wants to save those girl....but coming back in the city where all happened isn't as easy as she thoughts and with new murders she is even suspected....When a good looking and protective man as Rafe interfere she isn't sure she can trust him or herself around him at first. However as the danger grow they will have to trust each other.

I loved how  they took their time, oki in a sense they do get together too rapidly but  they strengthen it  progressively. They are attracted to each other but love comes later.
The investigation was well done with some good twists.

i really liked this story and i'm curious to read the rest of the series because if this book focused on Rafe and a serial killer, another member of the team is receiving strange messages and it's something i want to learn more about.

Score:  4/5
